About Waikiki Beach

Waikiki Beach is in Honolulu, Hawaii, south of O'ahu. There are many interesting places at this beach including Fort de Russy Military Reservation, Kapi'olani Park, Kahanamoku Lagoon, Kuhio Beach Park, and Ala Wai Harbor.

Waikiki means spouting fresh water. In the 1800s, Waikiki was a retreat for royalty in Hawaii; many people retreated here to surf. By the 1880s, a few small hotels opened. Today the area is filled with many hotels, including historic hotels that date back to the 20th century.

Surfing and swimming are very popular at Waikiki beaches since the surf breaks are far from shore; this allows plenty of gentle water for swimming. You can rent a rubber raft at stores located on the beach and float offshore. Surf lessons are available, as well as riding the waves on outrigger canoes. Seeing turtles at Grande Dame is a well-known feature of Waikiki beaches and other local beaches.

Waikiki has over 1 mile of beaches, each with their own individual names. Duke Kahanamoku Beach is near the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Kuhio Beach is great for novice surfers. This beach is also popular for swimming because of the retaining wall. Queen's Surf Beach is a popular place for snorkeling, surfing, swimming, and body surfing. Queen's Surf Beach has a nice walkway into the sea known as the Kapahulu Groin; also located at this beach is an outdoor movie screen frame. Other local beaches include the Royal Manoa Beach, Kahanamoku Beach, Fort DeRussy Beach, Gray's Beach, and San Souci Beach.

Waikiki Beach has a wide variety of restaurants. You can brunch at Surf Room inside the Royal Hawaiian Hotel. American restaurants on Waikiki Beach include Kincaid's Fish, Chop and Steak House, Ivy's at the Shorebird, Shorebird Beach Broiler, Oceanside Bar and Grill, Outrigger Beach Snack Shop, Chief's Hut, Chuck's Steak House, Sunset Terrace, and Jack in the Box. Chief's Hut and Sunset Terrace also offer delicious Hawaiian dishes on their menus. Sam Choy's Diamond Head is a popular restaurant that also offers delicious Hawaiian food. Diamond Head Grill and Azul are popular restaurants that server International food.

Waikiki Beach offers a variety of outlets for everyone to enjoy shopping. These outlets have a wide array of merchandise including Hawaiian jewelry, quilts, ceramics, fashion, books, apparel, art, and many other items. Some of the outlets include Luxury Row, which contains eight luxury boutiques.

The Royal Hawaiian Shopping Center has over 100 shops and restaurants. Other places of interests for shopping include the Waikiki Beach Walk and International Marketplace.

Along with hotels, Waikiki Beach offers many vacation condo rentals through companies such as Pacific Monarch, Waikiki Sunset, Waikiki Banyan, Waikiki Beach Tower, and Waikiki Circle Hotel.

At Waikiki Beach, there are plenty of things to do, a variety of places to shop, spectacular beach scenery, delicious places to dine, and comfortable and cozy accommodations.
